Value Does the Work by Susan Hilsenbeck, 2015

This quilt was made as an exercise on value and context for our book bee's discussion of the contrast chapter in Carolyn Friedlander's book "Savor Each Stitch". Except for the green binding and one magenta arc, the entire quilt was made from a 7-step gray gradation (hand-dyes from Caryl Bryer-Fallert Gentry) plus white-white and black. The backgrounds in each column of blocks are exactly the same down the column and the 'pie' units in each row are exactly the same across the row. Even knowing the algorithm, I am amazed at how different things look depending on the neighbors.
