Puddling by Amy Friend, 2015

Puddling was a great exercise in improvisation for me. It all started with a mini quilt I made that was an improvisational take on the Grandmother's Fan block. I wanted to start with something similar. I used skills that I learned when testing the Layered Curve score for Sherri Lynn Wood and adapted them to suit my purpose and design idea. I started with a solid center and then hand cut curved pieces to create each arc. Then I created patchwork strips that became more broken as they reached the ground. To me, they look like paint puddling. I quilted with organic straight lines, the straightness and density of which relate directly to the improvisational piecing within which I was quilting.
