Wings by Amy Friend, 2015

This quilt is an original paper pieced design reflecting a mid-century modern American aesthetic. It represents birds in flight in an abstract manner. Scattered black triangles are suggestive of beaks and add movement. The "birds" are arranged in flocks flying in one direction with a change of course in the second row. A bird turns and pushes through the wind. The quilting changes there too. On one side, the quilting is just diagonal lines; it changes to a pattern of elongated diamonds. The color palette of pink, turquoise, gold and white is reminiscent of mid-century modern melamine. The touch of whimsy seen in the fabric selections, the bold colors, and the simplification and abstraction of a form found in nature is suggestive of Charlie Harper's work.
