Michael Miller Glitz Fabric Challenge

  • This year’s fabrics include 12 glamorous prints from Michael Miller, and each participant will receive six fat eighths at random.
  • We ask that everyone who signs up to please plan to submit the final quilt to the Fabric Challenge category at QuiltCon — like other categories, this category is eligible for judging and awards up to $1,000!
  • To be eligible, quilts must primarily use the fabrics above, but additional coordinating Michael Miller solids are permitted. Once completed, these quilts will be entered it into the Michael Miller Fabric Challenge category at QuiltCon.
  • Official Michael Miller Fabric Challenge Category Description – quilts using a minimum of one of the 12 fabrics from the glitz collection in white, black, silver and/or gold. Additional coordinating Michael Miller solids are permitted. Michael Miller print fabrics may be used on the backing and binding.
  • The registration link will be sent out via email to members on May 9th at 10 a.m. Eastern time, 7 a.m. Pacific.
  • All fabric will be shipped by mid-July, and the deadline for entries is November 30, 2015 (the same as other QuiltCon quilt show entries).

CLICK HERE FOR A BIGGER VERSION OF THE FABRIC CHOICE PHOTO.

EDIT:

What are coordinating solids:

(from Michael Miller): Bright White & Black match the ground colors of Celebration Glitz... But you can use any solid Cotton Couture color.

I was up since 6 waiting for the email--then was distracted 'til 7:15. After filling the form, I got this message: "Thank you! We've got your sign-up. If you signed up while fabric is available, your fabric will be shipped by mid July!" More waiting to hear if I got in or not :0(

When will I know if I got in or not?  Thank you.

Blessings,

What store or online website is selling all these Michael Miller fabrics?  I checked Hancock's of Paducah, KY, online.  They had solids and other prints but not the prints in this challenge.  I would like to order some fabric.  Also, are their size guidelines on this challenge.

Marie

1. The MQG will soon release a list of vendors that sell the fabric.

2. I don't see any size guidelines so...do what you want!

New wrinkle? $30 submission fee? Huh? Well, that's news!

Andres Rosales
Andres Rosales's picture

The fee is to submit quilts to QuiltCon. The challenge notes said that we hoped that everyone that receives fabric will submit their quilt to QuiltCon. So, the fee isn't to receive fabrics, the email just points out that we'd love for everyone that gets fabric to submit quilts to QC.

The email sounds like submission to QuiltCon is a requirement.  Therefore the challenge costs $30.  In other words, a $30 donation to MQG if it isn't juried in.  If it is juried in then we also have the expense of shipping.  This "free" challenge is adding up quickly.

I think the clarification was great - reminding us that this is the challenge for QuiltCon and QC entries cost $30 (up to 3 quilts). Very clear to me :-) That way we know what we are in for before we agree to receive the fabric. Hopefully that ensures that the fabric doesn't go to waste and is given to those who have every intention of submitting their quilts to the show.

Even if we didn't get the fabric we would have to pay the entry submission fee to participate in this particular challenge. I also like the 2 challenges per year - one online and then one at the show - very balanced I think. I also appreciated how the challenge was organized this time. I was able to remind my fellow guild members to be on the lookout for the email and then sign up if they were interested.

Thanks to everyone who volunteers tirelessly to make these things happen :-)

Since no local quilt shop carries the challenge fabric, I am anxious to see the sample fabric arrive to see what solid color would look best with "Glitz". Then I can order my fabric on line all at the same time. I drew my quilt design on EQ7 and am just waiting for MQG's fabric samples to arrive.

Does anyone know what "coordinating solids" are? Are they any Michael Miller solids or just black and white? Thanks!

I am assuming any of the Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids are fair game...quite a few online quilt shops carry a big selection of colors.

Why is there such a long delay between signing up in early May until the fabric samples arrive ?  It is late July and still no fabric samples. I have the quilt designed but can't order my fabric until I see what solid color looks best with the samples.  These long delays are very frustrating.

daisyandjack@ho...
daisyandjack@hotmail.com's picture

I don't think the fabric was actually being released until July - I know that Hawthorne Threads has a note saying that the fabric should arrive late July and I notice its still the same today being 31 July !!

I received my fabric packet today, but I know very little about the challenge.  Is there more information available somewhere that I missed?  I see you need to send a $30 fee.  The quilt is to be submitted by November 30.  Since it is a juried show, do I submit photos prior to submitting the quilt?  Where do I send the quilt?  Thanks for your help.

This is my first time doing a challenge. With regards to patterns, is it better to come up with our own or is it acceptable to use a pattern designed by someone else? Giving credit to pattern maker also.

Thanks so much!

Andres Rosales
Andres Rosales's picture

Nowhere in the rules does it say one way or another. Pragmatically speaking though: this is a challenge sponsored by a fabric company, if your quilt wins and the company wants to use your quilt in some way they'll probably not want to jump through a lot of hoops to get permission to use a commercial pattern. You probably also don't want to use a free Robert Kaufman pattern for a Michael Miller challenge, etc. I would lean towards an original design.

Thanks for having all the challenge info put together here for us! Might I suggest for future challenges that this info also be included with the fabric as it's mailed out? Love my fabric!

Got my bundle this afternoon.  I LOVE 'em.  I need to hunt down some Confetti Border and Clover in Bling and Zirconium.  Do you have a list of sellers yet?  Is Fabric Depot in Portland one of the sellers?  I will be in Portland for QKS exhibit and would love to pick 'em up while I pick up some Couture.   I have design and math work out just need fabric to get started.

Blessings,

Sarah

I know a list of vendors will be released by MM and that should be soon but I don't know exactly when. You might want to contact Fabric Depot directly if you'll be visiting it as part of a trip.

Thanks, Andres.  I checked on FD online store last night but Glitz isn't there yet.   Maybe it will be by the time I'm for QKS :3    I will swing by local shops this weekend--just maybe I'll get lucky.  Thanks for the speedy reply.

I've been reading all the comments, and have read the entry form.  Are there really no other guidelines? Obviously this is my first challenge...
Actually I've never been to Quilt Con so I really don't know.  Would appreciate any guidelines you can give.

Thanks!

I purchased a fabric, from the Glitz collection, several weeks ago from Fabric.com.  They did have several of the fabrics.  I am not sure what they have, currently, but it is another place try.  I am using the large gold dot on the white background in a quilt for my granddaughter, which I designed several months ago, long before the challenge was announced.

Mine just arrived! Which was a lovely surprise, seeing as everyone else seemed to have gotten their's already, but mine was just sent later instead :) I did get double of two prints, but they're all silver so that's ok with me!

I can't find any information on what I need to attach for hanging. Also, what must my label include? The link above on general QuiltCon rules didn't mention anything about hanging or labeling. Thanks for your help!

  • If your quilt is selected to be exhibited at QuiltCon, we will provide you with a packet containing more detailed information on labels, sleeves, insurance and shipping.

Any news on the list of shops that will carry the fabrics? here in italy we have to find them in the usa because by the time that our Michael Miller Importer makes an order the fabrics will be in the shops well well after the end of november, IF  he will decide to order them.... About a few of us are considering partecipating and that does not make enough for an order in the usa. We members in Italy hope that all these situations will be considered in the future by The International Modern Quilt Guild. thank you for answering.

My fabric arrived today, happy days.  I did manage to source some of the Glimmer Quarter dot MC3744 from Craft Depot in Sydney, and I think they also have some of the Confetti Border in Glimmer if any Australians are looking for fabric.

Can anyone tell me if there are any online Canadian stores carrying the coordinating solids?  Our money is worth nothing to the US right now and I don't even want to think of how much it would cost to order, pay exchange, shipping and duties from an American store.

My Sewing Room carries Cotton Couture on their site.  Not much tough -- the only one listed that I can see using is white.  Here's a link to what they carry.  So far I haven't been able to find any other online source for MM solids, it's incredibly frustrating!

I looked at my fabrics again and compared them to the 12 prints.  Has anyone else noticed that the Glitz fabric they received are width of fabric of same fabric cut in half to make 2 fat 1/8th?  I have the silver border print in black WOF divided in half for 2 fat 1/8th: gold border print in white WOF divided in half for 2 fat 1/8th quarter dots silver on black WOF 2 fat 1/8th; Clover Silver on white WOF divided in half for 2 fat 1/8th.

I am okay with this as it helped me create an awesome quilt.  Just curious to see if anyone else had the same challenge.

Have a GREAT day!
