Ad Libbing by Linda Hungerford, 2014
Together, Linda and Lora made 15" x 15" improvisational blocks based on a color palette they jointly selected from Design-Seeds.com. Lora pieced the quilt top. Linda layered two battings, Quilter's Dream poly and wool, and quilted it with 50-weight Aurifil it on a domestic sewing machine. Lora bound and labeled the quilt. This is their first collaborative quilt. The Villages, Florida, United States

Curious by Amy Friend, 2014
This mini quilt was made as a personal challenge to design a minimal quilt with large scale piecing (proportionally to the size of the quilt) and to explore the diamond shape. I decided to place the diamond off center, so while the tip touches in the upper right corner, it does not in the lower left. I played with the position of the diamond, and the location and thickness of the band of additional color endlessly until it was pleasing to the eye. I quilted very densely in a diagonal grid. Lines are spaced just over 1/4" apart. West Newbury, Massachusetts, United States 20" x 20"

Haberdashery by Amy Friend, 2014
"This quilt is the result of my continued exploration of the diamond shape. I wanted to create a quilt with a minimalist design and a refined color palette. I designed my own paper pieced block and repeated it. The result is an unexpected mild optical illusion where the blocks look slanted. I limited myself to two colors but the background has a few shades of color for added interest and depth. The quilt is densely quilted with a grid spaced 1/2"" apart. The diamonds appear to be ties so I called the quilt Haberdashery defined in the US as a shop selling men's accessories such as ties." West Newbury, Massachusetts, United States 49" x 56"

Wooden Block Quilt by Sarah Laws, 2014
This quilt was inspired by wooden block toy shapes. The color palette features dimensional coral colors with a navy blue for contrast. I used jumbo blocks of flying geese, drunkards path circles and squares with large sashing areas. portland, Oregon, United States 54" x 76"

Cascade Quilt by Kristi Schroeder, 2014
This quilt was a collaborative project with Callie Works-Leary at CityCraft of Dallas, who requested I design a quilt featuring Kona Cotton's new 32 solid colors. The design is simplistic, but impactful, upon viewing and successfully highlights the new color way. Dallas, Texas, United States 50" x 62"

Funky Junk by Renee Tallman, 2014
This quilt started as a turquoise pieced top that I hated. I cut it up and sewed it back together seven times and took it out of the garbage at least twice. In the course of this quilt's life, it has been cut down from a 60" square, appliqued, un-appliqued, has had white borders, and has had pieced borders. This final layout was inspired by a quilt I saw at a show about 20 years ago. I don't know the name of that quilt's maker, but I never forgot her giant Drunkard's Path blocks and large-stitch quilting. I've decided that it is now finally acceptable and I quite like it. Aptos, California, United States 48" x 63.5"

Barn - Remnant by Kim Eichler-Messmer, 2014
Barn - Remnant was inspired by the remaining parts of broken down barns in the Midwest. It represents a memory of what the barns used to be. Kansas City, Kansas, United States 72" x 88"

Sunset Waves by Laura Hartrich, 2014
I answered Sherri Lynn Wood's call to create a quilt using one of her improv scores from her book Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters. I chose colors that appealed to my eye but also had a high variance in value. Once I had them all in place, the colors reminded me of a summer sunset, which inspired me to name the piece Sunset Waves. Working with Sherri Lynn's score was extremely challenging but also exciting. The beauty of improvisation is that it allows you to push through some fears and limits you have placed on yourself. I love the result. Oak Park, Illinois, United States 64" x 85"

Summer Break by Amy Anderson, 2014
A reading of Gwen Marston's "Minimal Quiltmaking" inspired a day of exploration played out on my design wall. Minimal, yet figurative; a sailboat at night. Asheville, North Carolina, United States 40" x 40"

Tangelo by Shannon Page, 2013
I used most of my favorite fabrics for this quilt and now I am not so hung up on cutting into hoarded fabric. Nothing is sacred! DALLAS, Texas, United States 67" x 72"
