Trajectory by Lauren Hawley, 2014
I've always wanted to make a quilt which reminds me of the course of a rocket, or of any goal or path, with all of its veering off and back on again. I considered calling the quilt The Trajectory of Happiness, since the colors evoke a sense of peace and contentment for me, but perhaps that's best left open to interpretation. My process was completely improvisational. I just played with all the pieces until I liked the way it looked on the design wall. There was a lot of measuring and Y seams involved after that. Los Angeles, California, United States 34" x 35"

Modern Chevron Remix by Cynthia Whitten, 2014
Modern Chevron Remix and Modern Chevron are my original design of a classic chevron pattern. I was inspired by a notebook I saw on display at stationary store. The notebook featured chevrons in different widths and many colors. I thought it look so cool, I wanted to apply that same method in fabric. It worked! I love mixing up the sizes and colors for a completely unique quilt each time. I created a template for the chevron which has 4 different widths for the variety needed within the quilt. Ladera Ranch, California, United States 38" x 65"

Feathers by Shannon Page, 2014
This quilt was made for the Riley Blake Basics Fabric Challenge. I enlarged and manipulated a paper pieced block to achieve the desired scale. I added a solid for every challenge fabric to create a cohesive palette. DALLAS, Texas, United States 65" x 75"

Diamonds by Shannon Page, 2014
This was made to compete in the Michael Miller Pinwheels Challenge. The diamonds are my own design and the background was made to reflect facets of gemstones. DALLAS, Texas, United States 75" x 85"

Pick-Up Sticks by Becky Goldsmith, 2014
As a kid, I played pick up sticks. This design reminds me of those colorful piles of skinny plastic sticks. My 'sticks' are arranged to imply explosive motion in each block—like fireworks! Sherman, Texas, United States 48" x 48"

Fissures by Debra Jeske, 2013
Fissures was first started in an Improv Slice and Insert class taken with Katie Pedersen and Jacquie Gering, and is loosely inspired by "Shattered" in their book, Quilting Modern. Lynnwood, Washington, United States 42" x 50"

Colorado 4x4 by Stephanie Ruyle, 2014
This quilt was recently part of the Modern Quilt Guild Exhibit at the International Quilt Festival-Houston. The quilt was designed for the "Colorful Colorado Quilt Challenge" where it received first place. The title, layout and design are my interpretation of things that make Colorado wonderful (the 4-corners region; four-teener's; 4 seasons; 4 bladed wind turbines. Part of the challenge was to incorporate the 4 solid colors into the quilt top. Other fabrics could also be used. Denver, Colorado, United States 81" x 84"

Melon Ice by Amy Friend, 2014
I enjoyed playing with large scale blocks, 18" square, to create this paper pieced design. I chose a simple color palette of just 4 Art Gallery Pure Element Solids. The quilting is done in concentric circles, starting slightly off center. The quilting adds movement and softens the geometric block design. West Newbury, Massachusetts, United States 72" x 72"

spiderweb by Leslie Schmidt, 2014
I was interested in the combination of gold yellows and greenish-blues. I challenged myself to create complexity and tonal depth in what is essentially a 2-color quilt. Brooklyn, New York, United States 71" x 71"

Pop pop by Charlotte Newland, 2013
This quilt was a challenge to myself to see what can be made using a 2.5" charm pack. The tiny size made it the perfect medium for intensive hand stitching. London, United Kingdom 10" x 10"
