Grove by Casey York, 2013
Grove evokes summer's late afternoon light as it slants through a stand of trees. The hot, sour colors of the trunks combined with the long diagonals of the shadows epitomize this time of day. The placement of vertical lines of quilting in the tree trunks accentuates the sense of three-dimensional form suggested by the use of color and shadow, while the background is filled in with quilting resembling wood grain. Hand-embroidery protects the raw edges of the tree trunk appliques, but the edges of the shadows intentionally were left raw, as their fraying will add texture to the design. Stereo by Season Evans, 2014
Stereo is a variation of the traditional courthouse steps block. The quilting and the title were inspired by the noise that stark color contrasts can make. Brooklyn, New York, United States 52" x 74"

As a kid, I played pick up sticks. This design reminds me of those colorful piles of skinny plastic sticks. My 'sticks' are arranged to imply explosive motion in each block—like fireworks! Sherman, Texas, United States 48" x 48"

Pixel Pusher II by Caro Sheridan, 2014
A pixel is the smallest component unit of any digital image. As a photographer, I began thinking of quilts in the same way by breaking down a classic 4-patch block into it's base component, the square. Rather than manipulate the pixels into a recognizable image, I amused myself with the interplay of light and dark to create movement. Everett, Massachusetts, United States 64" x 64"

Bias 3 continues my ongoing exploration of negative space and turning the traditional grid on the bias, all in the context of a very graphic design. The quilt is all machine piecing and machine quilted. Los Angeles, California, United States 60" x 75"

Meandering by Pam McCallie, 2014
"This piece was created for an exhibit at the Tennessee Aquarium. I combined my appreciation for the tradition and history of quilting, along with my love for clean, simple design to create this piece. My inspiration comes from the many curves or ""meanders"" of the Tennessee River. I chose the Drunkard's Path block to create the exaggerated meandering shape. Three shapes were used to represent the formation of the Tennessee River from the Holston and French Broad Rivers. The Rivers are surrounded with a natural, textured fabric and dense quilting to create a contrast between the water and earth." Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States 39" x 42"

By the second year after the death of my son, the persistent sense of grief and loss had become invisible to others. From the outside (the lavender side of the quilt), all looked normal. But underneath the surface, a fundamental change in identity was being shaped. Only after choosing the color, did I learn that lavender was the Victorian color of mourning, allowed after black had been worn for a period of time. Galesburg, Illinois, United States 68" x 94"

This quilt was inspired by wooden block toy shapes. The color palette features dimensional coral colors with a navy blue for contrast. I used jumbo blocks of flying geese, drunkards path circles and squares with large sashing areas. portland, Oregon, United States 54" x 76"
