2022-23 MQG Annual Report

Below you will find the MQG Annual Report for July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023. As always, our mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.

From the Board President Aleeda Crawley

Modern Quilt Guild Members and Friends,

This year has been amazing in many ways.  Our organization continues to grow and thrive, and that is thanks to the many volunteers who unselfishly give their time, energy, and ideas to make sure that we remain a welcoming, innovative guild. Our numbers offer a positive story for the Modern Quilt Guild.

While we have reached record membership and attendance at QuiltCon, that does not mean our work is done. Growth must be managed in ways that make every member feel valued and connected.  It is a challenge, but I think we can meet it. We hope to expand our events and provide leadership education without overwhelming our small but mighty staff.  We thank you for your support, and the commitment you have made to be a part of something wonderfully creative.  Onward!

Financial Report from Vikki Gray

The Modern Quilt Guild has had another successful year supporting its mission: to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community. We continue to grow our community of members, during 2023 the Modern Quilt Guild had over 18,000 members worldwide.

In February 2023, our annual convention, QuiltCon, was held in Atlanta, GA. The event was a successful exhibition of modern quilting, featuring more than 600 quilts. Quiltcon was attended by more than 8,300 from all 50 US States and Worldwide. Through sales of Community Outreach Quilts donated by our members, the organization raised over $7,000 that was donated to the Brow Sugar Stitchers Guild of Atlanta for the purpose of making contributions to other 501c(3) organizations local to the region QuiltCon is held. We love seeing how modern quilting can benefit our community in this way.

As the organization continues to grow, the Board of Directors is making concerted strategic investments in the organization by using past profits to improve administrative processes, increase staffing, and enrich member experiences.

2022-23 Letter from Karen R. Cooper, Executive Director

Dear MQG Members,

The period of July 2022 through June 2023 was a time of exciting change and growth for the MQG. In November 2022, we kicked off our 7th annual MQG Mini Swap with 540 members swapping modern mini quilts in early 2023. In December 2022, we ended our long-running MQG Pattern of the Month program, with all the patterns from this very successful program remaining available to members in the Resource Library. In February 2023, we celebrated 10 years of QuiltCon, kicking off the celebration with a look back at the previous Best in Show quilts and sharing various video and written interviews with these award-winning makers. We also hosted our first MQG Sew Along with around 500 members making the Criss Cross Chain pattern from the MQG Resource Library.

QuiltCon 2023 was held in February in Atlanta, Georgia with near-record attendance. Chawne Kimber was the featured quilter and a special exhibit featured 20 of her works. In addition to Chawne’s work, quilts from the Brown Sugar Stitchers, the Fulton County Remembrance Project, and an MQG member exhibit of 20 Modern X quilts were also on display.

Member quilts were exhibited in several locations during this year. Ten quilts were featured at the Houston International Quilt Festival in our Points of View exhibit, and the Selections of QuiltCon 2022 and 2023 traveled to Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon, the Australasian Quilt Show in Melbourne, Australia, and the Airing of the Quilts in Winterset, Iowa.

We look forward to continuing to develop exciting content for members, as well as continuing efforts to create an inclusive and supportive community of modern quilters!
